Activity Levels.

The Brigade was mobilised on 1068 occasions during the year 2004. While chimney fires have been on the decrease they are still the biggest cause of fire outbreak in Kerry. An ongoing advertising campaign is pursued to encourage the public to get their chimneys swept thoroughly.

                 Number Of Incidents

Chimney fires occur when deposits of carbon and dust accumulate in a chimney and are set alight by sparks or flames from an open fire. Repeated chimney fires breakdown the construction of the flues resulting in dampness as well as the risk of the building going on fire. Such fires are avoided by regular chimney cleaning.
The number of malicious false alarms was again reduced significantly in 2004. Gardi investigations in this area have achieved positive results. Also under CAMP every call is recorded and available to the Gardai which is discouraging at least some hoax calls.

The construction of new buildings with higher standards of fire precautions coupled with a more safety conscious population leads to lower numbers of fatalities and lower property losses.

During the year a total of 221 Fire Safety Certificates were granted for new buildings the design of which showed compliance with the Fire Safety requirements of the Building Regulations.
