News For March By Gareth Elbell
Chief Retires
After 19 years in charge, Chief Fire Officer for Kerry Fire and Rescue, Mr Kevin Caffery has retired. We wish him the best of luck in his retirement.
S.A.C.F.O. Mr Vincent Hussey has been asked to step up to the plate and has been appointed Acting Chief and we wish him the best of luck too.
Gorse Season Comes Early
March 2009 saw the regular spring gorse fire season come early.
With a very mild season last year there have been some hard fires so far this year, with lots of brown grass and furze. At some stage or another all the stations in the county have been out, with most of them at multiple pump calls.
Speaking to a few Firefighters around the county, the wild land fire boot being used by some is an invaluable piece of kit for the tough ground in the bogs and on the mountains.
A bit of rain in the first few days of April has put the brakes on it, however I’m sure it’s not over.
